Barnum advertised his American Museum as the home of "millions of curiosities," and visitors could purchase a guidebook such as this one to learn more about them. The Guidebooks included extensive descriptions (and in some cases small illustrations) of the various attractions and exhibits that filled the museum from floor to ceiling.
